Lindy Hop as my Safe Harbor When I was Longing to Be A Mom

There is a lighthouse in the center of the picture with the sun setting in the background and a dark red cabin on the right side

The lighthouse is the symbol of a safe harbor. A place of refuge. A light in the darkness to clarify. If you fear sailing in the dark - look for those around you to help illuminate your path. To guide you. Life is always full of twists and turns and the need to navigate rocky waters. What is your safe harbor? What ways do you look for guidance?

When I was trying to conceive a child years ago and didn’t know what to do next. I found Lindy hop, which is a group of jazz dances from the African American tradition. I went one day to a local dance and met someone who also wanted to learn and in a fateful moment, we agreed to take private dance lessons together because there were no group classes offered at the time. I learned so much in the two years that followed. There were times when I danced 5-7 nights a week. We took classes in multiple styles, practiced, performed and attended workshops together. The dance world became my safe harbor. My escape from the world where everyone wanted to know when I would magically become a mom. The room where the main question I got asked was, “would you like to dance”? I had a lot of health challenges and at times I felt like I was getting every cold going around and every infection possible. Sometimes I needed 10 hours of sleep a night to function. But somehow when I danced- I got enough endorphins and I forgot about my troubles. And my feet led me on amazing adventures. When life is a struggle what do you do to make life less heavy? What brings you joy?
